Richard Patrick of Filter  is really cool guy, who I enjoyed photographing. He told lots of cool stories and we had an awesome afternoon of just roaming around the streets of Detroit shooting photos. I also shot group images of the rest of the band as well. A great band I hope I can work with more.

Dream Theater at the Royal Music Theater…Interesting show, Had a minor incident at the door. The women at the box office was trying to tell me that I couldnt get in with no ticket. Although I had a working photo pass. Well the best thing to do in these situations when being calm and rational gets you no where….is to just pull a Ross Halfin and throw a shit fit, threaten to leave and complain to the proper people..tour manager,record label, manager of the venue..ect… well as I walked out the door, she came flying out of the box office, holding the door open telling me to please come back. Soooo I said I ok..and turned around and went in..

Motion City Soundtrack at St.Andrews hall Detroit…I have to admit I knew nothing about this band until I got a magazine assignment to photograph them. Not only did this band pack the hall both nights in a row. They did something utterly cool for their fans. The first night they played their first two albums in their entirety. Then on the second night they played their third album and their brand new album. So shooting both nights I was able to hear the bands entire catalog. They also hung around at their merch booth and around the main floor after the show talking with their fans and signing autographs. I wish more bands would do this… A cool bunch of guys and an energetic show… I wish I would have done a photo session with them…well next time.

Im a fairly well known music photographer. Im usually one of the photographers who always has an all access laminate and is working directly for the bands. Ive been on tour with bands since I was 17. Ive been a pro music photographer for over 26 years. Published in Magazines, Tour books,Posters,Cd Booklets,Music Books.

Yesterday you went on a blog called Driven by boredom and proceeded to make derogatory statements about  a photographer name Ken Settle. First off that’s extremely unprofessional. I will make sure and let all my music industry contacts (trust me I have a lot of them) know exactly the level of professionalism that you exhibit.

Second, Ken Settle is one of the highest regarded photographers in the Music Industry. He has shot Iconic photos of musicians and documented music from the mid 1970′s till now. Hes truly a legendary photographer. Hes been a great friend, and someone who has taught me a lot about being a great photographer. Hes someone who has an amazing passion for his work. You could learn a thing or hundred from this guy. I hold him up there with people like Baron Wolman, Jim Marshall,Neil Zlowzower, Mark Weiss, Ross Halfin. If you don’t know who these people are, I highly suggest you take them the time to learn.

Thirdly, Jake..who are you and your little blog to think you can just publicly insult an Iconic magazine photographer? Because when it comes down to it. If it was between your no name blog and kens magazine assignment’s (Rolling Stone,Guitar player, Player japan,Playboy) I’m sure he would get the photo pass everytime!  Most managements, record labels and music magazine know Ken and hold him in high regard.

Now Jake I’m not writing this to insult you, but you do need to be put in your place. I love how now a days this new breed of blog writers and photographers have crept up and they act all high and mighty, as if the the printed magazines and photographers that shoot for them are out dated. You come in the photo pit and try to be all aggressive. Which makes me laugh, cause I see people like you and your photographers in their with your little first 3 songs only photo pass and I’m standing there with an All Access laminate. And Instead of giving people like myself or Ken the recognition they deserve, your first instinct is to attack and insult them. Because we might be in your way. Although our assignment is for a major magazine, management or record label. But somehow you think your little no name blog is more important.

We are the ones who have made careers out of this and pave the way for people like yourself. You should be thankful. Not act like a douche bag, which is the term I believe you stated about Ken. Which I find Appalling. Honestly when I read that, the first thing I wanted to do was call every industry contact I know and tell them to never clear your blog again. You should be careful when your burning bridges with us old school guys, you make lots of contacts after 30 years in the music industry. People like you need to learn what the word respect means!!!

As I sat there photo editing my Images of  They Might Be Giants from their show at the Sound Academy on Sat. I keep thinking about the first time I heard them.. I remember in 1988 seeing the “Ana Ag” video on MTV’s “120 mins” show and I had to go get their album. So I went into a record store in the west village of NYC and bought “Lincoln”. I then proceeded to go on my friends college radio show which turned out, was a heavy metal show. He said I could play anything I wanted. So I pulled out Lincoln and played Ana Ag!  I said on the air that it didn’t matter what genre the show was…these guys should get airplay everywhere! Cause they are that freakin cool!!!

So zoom ahead to 23 years later and I’m at the show on Sat. It was my first time seeing the band since around 1996. So I was excited to see the 2 johns from Brooklyn.  I get to the venue and the line of people went all the way down the street and around the building,which didn’t surprise me. The band has always had a solid following. Opening the show was another NYC guy name Jonathon Coulton. I was not familiar with his music. But I told their publicist who also handles They Might Be Giants that I would photograph Jonathon too. I’m glad I did.  Hes a great songwriter and guitarist. I really like his music. He had a great crowd response, infact I spoke to a few people up in the front that said they were mainly there for him.

So 9pm came and it was time for the two Johns from Brooklyn to hit the stage..and as always they put on a great show. Even had a silly but interesting segment with Sock puppets and Meg Ryan on their giant screen. Plus John Flansburgh personally handed out really cool window stickers at the end of the show too.  It was fun for all…

        FOO FIGHTERS PHOTO WAVIER

Last Monday I went to photograph the Psychedelic Furs, an English band I remember very well from the early eighties. I remember when the Talk Talk Talk album came out and I heard the original better version of Pretty in Pink. Supposedly this was the song that inspired John Hughes in writing his film “Pretty in Pink”. The band went in the studio and re-recorded the song for the soundtrack. Love my Way was another great song that came out 1982. I was happy to see them out on tour again. I hadn’t seen the band in quite some time and I was looking forward to it. They went on at 6pm,so there was a nice amount of daylight. It was very overcast out…so I ended up doing a lot of monochrome images with a light sepia tone. The band sounded great…They played a great setlist.

Spent the day listening to Thin Lizzy (live on BBC), early Bowie outtakes,Rainbow, Whitesnake (Live in the Heart of the City) as I photo edited my Whitesnake images from Sunday. I hadnt been out to Pine Knob music theater in a year and I was there twice this weekend. Im not gonna talk about the opening band who I use to be their tour photographer. They Opened.. Thats all Im saying on that subject. I was looking forward in seeing David Coverdale. Being into Deep Purple and Whitesnake (1977 to 1983). I hadnt seen David Coverdale since the 1987 version of the band. I will dig thru and post some of my 1980′s whitesnake pics.  Even though I like the earlier version of Whitesnake the best (Coverdale,Moody,Paice,Lord,Murray,Marsden). I have to admit the musicians in the last versions of the band have all been very good. I esp liked when Rudy Sarzo,Vivian Campbell,and Tommy Aldridge were in the band…and the current line up are all very good too. I like Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach. But I just wish Mr.Coverdale would pull out some of the older tunes for us long time appreciators.

It was 1987 and Alice Cooper and Ace Frehley did a fantastic tour…I photographed many shows. So here we are 24 years later and once again these two rock icons are touring together. This time the show was at the legendary Pine Knob music theater outside of Detroit. I got there about a half hour before Ace was to go on. I wasn’t planning on photographing Ace. But when I got there I was told I could. I only shot a few songs, Ace doesnt move around too much and how many pics can you get of Ace standing in front of the mic with his guitar. Ace to my surprise, sounded good. Reminded me of the shows he performed on the Alice Cooper tour in 87. I especially like the Les Paul with his KISS makeup image on the headstock.

After Ace I walked with Brian the media director to an area where all the other photographers where hanging out. Many I haven’t seen in a long time. It felt like 1987 all over again. It was nice having some time to catch up with everyone. I surprised my good friend and awesome photographer Ken Settle  with a copy of “Neil Zlowzowers: Van Halen” book.  Which I picked up at the Border Books closing. I’m glad he liked it. Its a very well printed book. Neil should be proud of the way the book came out.

Around 8:45 we all headed down to the barricade for Alice Cooper. Interesting enough Ace’s people still hadn’t removed all of his gear off the stage. But they were very quick and Alice started promptly at 9pm. For the first song Alice is about 25ft up on this large riser that when turned around looked like a giant stair case to no where. The lighting curtains during this part of the show were nice and provided a cool backdrop.

This was the first time photographing Alice since 1994, Alice sounded great! Although he didn’t use as much theatrics as in the past. But none the less Alice put on a great show doing classic songs such as 18,Billion Dollar Babys,Under my Wheels,Elected,plus it was the last show of the North American tour.  I was very happy with the images I produced. Also it was great catching up with all my photographer friends.
